My dog also chewed one of the straps, and the halti is now useless. Be aware that you have to closely watch your dog when you use the halti to make sure he is not chewing it. I was very surprised to find the halti ruined when I took it off of my dog because I was less than 3 feet away the entire time he wore it.

We have purchased a great many collars, but even the gentle leader, which is a similar product, could not keep our big dogs at heel, but this did. The other reviewers are correct, dogs may chew through it. But that is true of most soft collars, and this is a much better choice than metal chokers. Simply keep an eye on your dog and you should be okay, because when the halti is taught, on walks, it's unbeatable. I rarely write reviews, but it's such a pleasure strolling with it, we thought it was helpful that we share.

Flawed Design. Jan 21, 2009
My 10 month old lab chewed through this product within five minutes of his first walk. Thank god for the safety connected to the collar or who knows what would have happened.
The design has a strap that goes right over the side of the mouth area. As the dog opens and closes their mouth, the strap goes tight and slack. When the strap is slack, the dog can chew on it. I would say that this is a major design flaw on a product designed to restrain your dog while on a walk.
I wouldnt say that my dog is particularly bright so if he can figure this out within 5 minutes on his first walk I'm sure any dog can. If you are going to buy this, please make sure you attach the safety strap to the collar.

I've finally learned my lesson. Today my dog chewed through her third Halti-- all while they were on her! She chewed through the last one in under a minute while I had my back to her tending to my daughter. I haven't contacted the company about it, yet.
They work great but are NOT durable.

Worked Well Until My Dog Got Smart Oct 28, 2008
This was the second Halti I purchased for two different dogs. The Halti worked very well with the first dog (a Staffordshire terrier). However, even though it was properly fitted to her head, the second dog (a bull terrier) figured out how to chew her way through the strap that went around her snout. Thank goodness for the safety loop! The company's "unconditional guarantee" does not cover this type of damage.
