Gate works for large openings, but installation is permanant Dec 15, 2009
By optyman This gate works for wide openings. Our width was 62-inches wide, and was the area between the dining room and the kitchen.
This particular gate uses four mounts that you screw into your walls. The gate itself can easily be detached from the mounts after installation in case you want to temporarily remove the gate. Another comment indicated that your baseboard may get into the way during installation. This is true. You do have the option of cutting the baseboard, or do what we did, mount the gate just above the baseboard. This was suspended less than three inches for us, so no child could get their head stuck in the gap. The only thing that it did was make the gate a little flimsy, being suspended in the air like that. It works for now, and I can always change it later. It would seem more sturdy if the bottom bar laid on the floor all the way across the opening, as I believe that is what it is designed to do. Screws for mounting seem a little short, if you take into consideration the thickness of your drywall (in case you want to screw into a stud). I used a couple of deck screws to mount the brackets onto one side of the wall that would insert into a stud. You may want to locate a stud in your walls on at least one side of your opening for better stability. The other side is mounted in drywall for us with the provided plastic inserts. The latching mechanism can be unlatched with one hand, but you really need two hands to re-latch it. Unlike the narrower version of this gate, the door is not spring loaded, so it stays open where you leave it. It swings open to either side of the gate. Color is brown. The narrower version of this gate is in white. Again, we have both. We expect the gate to functionally work for us. If you have wooden floors, you may want to run a rubber or one-half of the velcro tape (the soft side) underneath the bottom bar to prevent scratching your floors, as the unit shifts slightly upon use. Good luck with this gate.

LOVE THIS GATE!!! Oct 11, 2009

This gate is amazing! I have bought many gates over the years. I have two mastiffs and I wanted something tall enough to keep them from getting over AND something stylish that would look good at my front hallway entrance to my house. It is just beautiful put up. I have had many compliments from people coming over on the gate. Its very sturdy and is easy to take off if I need to. It securely attached to the wall, but yet with just twisting the locking pieces on the sides you can just lift it right off and if you don't want to use it. Then to put it back you just sit it back down into the connectors on the wall and lock it in place. Easy to put together also. I have NOTHING to say negative about this gate. It is one of the rare purchases you get when you know you got exactly what you wanted!

Great purchase! Jun 21, 2010
By happymama23 We are extremely satisfied with this gate. We have a large dog who loves to jump up on guests coming in the house. So we used this gate as a barrier to the entryway. It fits the 6' opening perfectly and looks fantastic! It's a darker bronze color (not what is pictured). I was afraid it would look tacky but it actually looks a little stylish. It holds up great to the 85-lb dog jumping on it as well.

Free at last, NOT Nov 05, 2009
By Abe Froman What a great gate. Not many that span this far that is also fashionable. Easy to install and easy to operate, with a child in arm (of course you can't have the child in arm to install. Unless of course you are a accomplished plate spinner). The only knock I have is I wish it came in wood. Took about 45 minutes from beginning to open the package to putting on the final adjustments. The ENTIRE gate also can be removed, and put back up, within seconds, for when entertaining company.

Best wide gate EVER! Apr 11, 2011

This is the third gate we've had for the 6' opening between our kitchen and living room. The first one was the Wide Spaces Swing Gate. It was difficult to open and one morning my husband stumbled over it and it broke into several pieces. The second one was a slightly better wooden gate. A bit more solid and lasted about 2 years. Eventually, our monkey boy toddler destroyed that too. Of all the gates we've had, this one is the most solid, adjustable, and tallest. the gate is easy enough to operate one-handed, but still too tricky for our toddler to use. He's yanked pretty hard on it and it barely budges. Best of all, we have older cats who have a hard time jumping over the baby gates. It just worked out so that the extension on one side is large enough the cats can pass through, but kids can't. This gate is worth every penny.
